Eyes Over the World: Aerial Photo Secrets from Around the Globe

Editor’s Note: Getting an aerial perspective on your subject is terrific, but it doesn’t guarantee that the resulting photograph will be interesting or engaging. Drone photographer Dirk Dallas knows what it takes to capture an image that stops viewers in their tracks, and his new coffee-table compilation of drone photos, “Eyes Over the World,” is full of these breathtaking bird’s-eye views. We asked Dirk to share some highlights from the new book and give us some insight into the secrets he and the other featured photographers used to create their art. Arid Clara Cao, Mar del Plata, Argentina Sometimes we aren’t able to travel to some epic location to fly and shoot with our drone. This is why we should all be inspired by …

Flying After Dark

As a professional drone pilot, conquering the hours of darkness means acquiring new knowledge, thinking seriously about safety and clearing bureaucratic hurdles—but it opens up a whole new world that only a few have begun to explore. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), there are 180,000 certified commercial drone operators in the United States, and waivers have been issued to 4,400 of them allowing for night time flights. Simple arithmetic reveals that this elite group constitutes 2.5 percent of the total population of drone pilots. If you’re not one of them, then each aircraft you own is really only half a drone, because you can only fly it for half of the year—the half when the sun is above the horizon. Applying to the FAA for a certificate of …

Mission Profile: 3D Mapping An Osprey Nest (On a Cell Tower!)

Wildlife conservation is one use for small, civil uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) that is seldom listed among the marquee applications for the technology, such orthomosaic mapping, industrial inspection, and emergency response, to name a few, yet it has the potential to make significant contributions to environmental preservation. That’s what I learned when June Stephens, an ornithologist submitting a paper to the national conference of the North American Ornithology Society, contacted me about using a drone to document an osprey nest. This seemed like a straight-forward mission I could knock out in less than an hour of flying, but that was before she explained that she wanted to build a 3D model of the nest and, by the way, the birds had installed radio jamming equipment around …

Drone Expert Tech: Know Your Limits

Understanding FAA, operational, and personal LIMITS is key to safe flying At 7:20 p.m. on Sept. 21, 2017, a DJI Phantom 4 had a midair collision with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter flying off the shoreline of Staten Island, New York. The collision damaged a main rotor blade and a window on the upper left-hand side of the helicopter, forcing the crew to make an emergency landing at Linden Airport in New Jersey. The Army helicopter was operated by the 82nd Airborne Division and was one of two Black Hawks assigned to a security patrol during the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York City in advance of the U.S. president’s arrival. HOW IT HAPPENED The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) launched an investigation into …

Drone Imaging 101

There’s no doubt about the fact that drones have become increasingly popular. They are more affordable than ever, and more advanced and sophisticated than before. But getting started with drones is not as straightforward as you might think. It involves some studying, knowledge of and complying with the regulations, and (most important) a lot of practice. You need to learn how to fly the drone safely before you can actually start taking photos with it. In an attempt to help you shoot better drone videos and photos, we asked some drone video and photo experts one simple question: “What are your top tips for a beginner who would like to get started with aerial photography or videography using a drone?” Here are their answers. Placido Faranda …

The Art of a Drone Selfie

Generally speaking, I always thought of selfies as being harmless fun. However, the idea of people becoming obsessed with the manufacturing of their own self-portraits came across as somewhat narcissistic. Because of that I always steered away from taking pictures of myself, and never in a million years would I have imagined writing a feature on taking selfies—yet alone this one. So if you’re wondering what inspired this article, it emerged from a moment I flicked through a web link featuring some of the world’s most powerful drone pictures. There were a couple of images exhibited there that lured me into exploring this avenue. A common theme among these images was that they were not just top-down aerial pictures taken with a drone; they managed …
